Discussion Sessions
Session A
- Health and Happiness
Health experts will provide information, resources, and preventative tips on prevalent health issues concerning the South Asian community, such as cardiovascualar disease and diabetes. We will also be joined by a yoga, ayurveda, and reiki practitioner, who will share insight on more unconventional ways in which to understand, heal, and protect our bodies, and overall selves. - Rewrapping the Sari : Sari Tying 101 + Contest
Ever wonder how some women just throw on their saris in minutes? You can do the same in this supportive Sari Tying Lesson, followed by a Sari Tying Contest. If possible, please bring your own sari and pins!
Session B
- Vamps, Tramps & Bhabhis (Oh My!): Female Archetypes in Bollywood
From the bubbly “Basanti” to the sultry Bipasha we will explore the archetypes of Bollywood women over the years, and discuss the potential for creating a more multi-dimensional presence. Filmmakers to Bollywood enthusiasts all are welcome! Attendees will have the opportunity to submit via email or bring in examples of female archetypes, either through photographs from movies, or photographs/artwork you have created. - Show me the Money – ABCs of Money Management and Investing
In debt? Would you like to start saving? Want to be financially independent? This introductory discussion will include financial best practices, tools to help you manage your money, and an introduction to investing.
Session C
- Stigmas and Support: Mental Health in the Desi Community
Led by a mental health specialist, this session will begin with a discussion of the stigmas against mental healthcare in the desi community and how to deconstruct them. We will provide resources for support and safe spaces to develop emotional strength. - Let's talk about Sex, Yaar: Info and Resources on Sexual Health and Pleasure
A safe and confidential session to learn about staying safe, having orgasm, and your community resources. Also learn the basics of sex toys and alternative means for pleasure.
Session D
- Aaja Nachle
Unwind from a productive day with an upbeat and fun Bollywood dance class! This dance class will have you tapping your feet and shaking your hips like Madhuri Dixit all the way home. Please be prepared to come with some comfortable clothes. - Bindis to Bombs
How can we be the bindi-wearing bhangra-busting rage while simultaneously be painted as America's worst enemy? We will look at how previous political events have shaped current images of South Asians, and we'll discuss how we can create positive representation.
